Meningitis is usually a complication of a viral or bacterial infection (there are many viruses and bacterial infections which can cause meningitis, but rarely do in the vast majority of people) which someone contracts which typically wouldnt cause meningitis, but sadly, not every infection is typically uneventful and not life-threatening.
Please be aware that the chances of being the unlucky person who has a minor infection which can lead to meningitis is statistically very slim, nevertheless, it is possible.

The risk of cleaning out a chicken house is a systemic fungi called histoplasma. It is primarily a pulmonary infection but can become systemic and deadly without treatment.
