Try using Snake Stopper from Spray-N-Grow. It is a snake repellent that contains a blend of oils and sulfur that snakes taste or smell and then avoid. Best of all it is natural and completely biodegradable so you can feel safe using it around your garden and your five year old. Good Luck!

I don't know what it is called, but there is something that you can put into the ground that sends out pulses of vibration. Snakes **** these vibrations, because in there instincts it means that they are about to possibly be crushed to death (earthquakes). Just do a quick Google search for 'pulse snake repellant'. I am sure you can find something on FeeBay (eBay) that will help you out.

When the early settlers arrived in Australia and built a house for the new Governor of the colony they dug a trench around the perimeter of the property and filled it with soil imported from Ireland. As you know there are no snakes in Ireland because good ol' Saint Patrick drove them all out. The theory was that the snakes in Australia would not cross this barrier of blessed soil. There is no record of whether it was successful but you could try it and let me know the outcome.
